The US supported the Diem regime until it became evident that it could not subdue the insurgents and then opted to invade. Diem was later done away with on the orders of the White House. Later, the US prioritised attacking North Vietnam. The war was never about fighting Communism, it was about stomping out all independent currents from the developing world.<br /><br />I'm not making any of this up.
